"Went to Island BJJ having never trained anything in my life. Came to the trial week thinking I'd feel ridiculous — left wanting to buy my gi before the week was over. 4 months later, 18lbs down and I can actually defend myself in sparring."

"Came looking for self-defense, stayed for the community. It's hard to find a gym without ego. Here the vibe is different — everyone helps each other regardless of level. I've already referred 3 friends. None of them regretted it."

"I'd tried CrossFit, weightlifting, nothing lasted more than 2 months. At Island BJJ I've been consistent for 14 months. When your training partners are waiting for you, you show up. That doesn't happen at any other gym."

Common questions.

Do I need experience to start? +

No. Most of our students started without ever setting foot on a mat. Beginner classes start from zero. Your only job is to show up.

Do I need to buy a gi for the trial week? +

No. The gi is provided by the academy for your entire trial week. Come in a t-shirt and shorts. That's it.

I'm over 40. Is this for me? +

Yes. We have students of all ages training regularly. BJJ is one of the most accessible martial arts for adults who start late — because it prioritizes technique over strength.

What happens after the free week? Is there a contract? +

After the week, an instructor has a quick conversation about your goals and presents the membership options. There's no mandatory long-term contract. You continue because you want to.

Why Island BJJ and not another gym in Muskegon? +

We're the #1 Atos Jiu-Jitsu affiliate in Michigan. Atos is the world's #1 team — André Galvão's team, multiple world champions. Our students won IBJJF Pan American medals and 1st place overall in 2024 regional tournaments. And the Aloha culture isn't marketing: there's no belt ego, no gym politics.
